Internalization of Islamic Educational Values in The Panggih Manten Tradition of The Javanese Traditional Wedding Ceremony

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the internalization of Islamic educational values within the Panggih Manten tradition of the Javanese traditional wedding ceremony. This research employed a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that the internalization process occurs through three main stages: value transformation, value transaction, and trans-internalization. The research reveals that the Panggih Manten tradition serves as an effective medium for Islamic education through cultural acculturation. In the transformation stage, values are transferred through physical symbols such as Kembar Mayang representing hope in God's light, and Wiji Dadi symbolizing readiness for parenthood. The transaction stage involves two-way communication between traditional leaders, parents, and the bridal couple, aligning Javanese customs with Islamic principles through rituals like Balangan Gantal, which establishes a moral covenant for mutual respect. Finally, the trans-internalization stage represents the deepest level of value integration, where rituals such as Sungkeman instill profound spiritual awareness that divine pleasure is attained through parental blessings.
